The initial letter
This school year I am so excited. I am excited for leadership, cheer, and the overall school year all together. I feel as if this year the leadership class is so highly bonded and everyone is inclusive and gets along very well. We all listen to each other and I feel like since we actually had the chance to go to core camp this year, we all have gotten to get to know each other better. As a junior this year I am so excited because I finally feel like I know everything going on around campus and I feel as if our class as a whole gets a long pretty well. We also have gotten to get to know the senior class better and I am excited for all the events and activities this year. I have realized how fast school goes and how quickly this school year is truly going to go by so I am trying to take in all of the little moments and make the most out of every little thing. I am supper excited for my position this year. This year I am spirit commissioner and I am really looking forward to working with Allie, Elias, and Ewan this school year. I am super excited to put together some cute spirit fits and show not only a bunch of school spirit but also encourage my classmates to show their school spirit as well. I am also looking forward to going to all the classes and passing out candy. Although I have heard sometimes it can be hard taking spirit counts I am still extremely excited about it and even if it does get hard sometimes, I will make the best out of it. Aside from my personal job in leadership I am eager to help my class with things like homecoming, and maybe prom as well. Through leadership this year, I hope to make strong connections with those inside and outside of my class. I also want to continue to stay more involved this year and be a role model since I am now an upperclassmen. Personally, I want to stay on top of all my work this year and make sure I am not becoming lazy and maintaining good grades. I want to get all my work done before the deadline and make sure all my work is put out to the best of my ability. I have a good feeling about this year and I am extremely excited to see what is yet to come!

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” -Maya Angelou
This particular quote really means a lot to me and to my life because we often tend to look at where someone is and the beauty of their life but we forget that everyone goes through changes. We often look past what someone has been through and just admire the beauty of their current situation, but the change that they have gone through is just as beautiful and important because it is what made them who they are.
“Everything happens for a reason.”
It’s a simple, cliche quote but it is so true. Every little thing does happen for a reason. Bad things happen to us and we don’t understand why but in the future we will see that it had to happen to shape us into who we are, and a lot of the time good things come from those bad things we just can’t see it at first because we are so hung up on that bad thing. Every struggle that we go through shapes us into who we become and ultimately makes us stronger.
“Only dead fish go with the flow.”
This quote seems a little gory, and to be honest it kind of is but if you really think about it, it makes sense. It’s telling us that it’s okay to not go with the flow because going with the flow is not always the better option like we think it is. It’s good to go against the flow and do your own things rather than following the crowd because that’s what everyone does.

Two goals I have for myself that are related to leadership would be, to stay in leadership all 4 years since I have already made it 3 out of the 4. Another goal would be to get more involved this year because the last 2 years I feel like I haven’t made it an ultimate priority to dedicated to the program, I was dedicated but not as much as I could have been.
Two Short term goals I have are to maintain straight A’s this year and to not procrastinate and get my work done on time, if not ahead of time.
Two Long term goals I have are to ultimately be successful and happy in life and also to attend a 4 year college that I am content with.

Looking back on my goals for this past year, I have realized how much I have truly accomplished and it makes me really proud to be able to already check some of those goals off my list. For the first two goals I said I wanted to be apart of the leadership program all four years and to get more involved for this school year. I can happily say that I will in fact be in the leadership program all four years of high school and I was a lot more involved at Ripon High this year than I was the last by joining and consistently being apart of clubs like girls league and attending a lot more events and games. Although I am extremely happy to say I have accomplished these goals, it is also very interesting to see the goals I had when it was the beginning on the school year and I felt super motivated as to now when I am just waiting on spring break and summer. It is a good reminder to myself to stick to those goals and remember what I want, and to make sure I get it done.

Ava keast is a junior at Ripon High School who hopes to make every room she walks into better than it was before. Ava is involved in many different things at Ripon high including Girls League, cheerleading, competitive cheerleading, Leadership, and pride tribe. Ava has cheered for a total of 7 years, but has been cheering at Ripon high for 3 years. She has done competitive cheerleading for 2 years and hopes to cheer in college. Ava wants to enjoy every single second of high school and embrace even the challenging moments because she knows how quickly the past two years have already flown by and can’t imagine how quickly the next two will go by as well. In the future Ava dreams of going to college at Clemson. She isn’t 100% sure what she wants to do when she grows up but she is very interested in nursing and social media management. Ava knows she wants to be successful, but more importantly knows she wants to leave a legacy of being a kind hearted human being.

Someone that I look up to and admire in my life would be my cousin Michael. Michael and I have a lot in common, he is the youngest and has two brothers and I do as well. His oldest brother struggles with addiction and has since Michael was pretty young. Like Michael, growing up I had to watch my oldest brother struggle with addiction and deal with everything always being about him. Thankfully my brother has completely changed, but Michael being the youngest pushed through everything and worked so hard at everything he did. He had excellent grades all throughout high school, went to Pepperdine and The University of San Francisco and after that he played minor league baseball for the Cardinals. Although Michaels family life wasn’t always perfect he took his own path and wrote his own story rather than following his brothers paths. I can relate so much to Michaels life and I want to be just like him.

To find out my inner animal I took a spirit animal test and it told me that I was a deer because I can overcome anything challenging and achieve ambitious goals with kindness and grace. The test also said those with a deer as their spirit animal have an evident bond with their inner child’s innocence. I never would have thought that my inner animal would be a deer, but the more I read about it and really think about my own characteristics and traits I do agree with it. I would like to believe that I am a very Kind person and I feel that I am very gentle and kind to new people I meet! I also do feel like I am in touch with my inner child and innocence because I try to see the good in others. Along with my inner child I feel as if there are many times I find myself truly reflecting on bad habits that are not healthy which is truly what it means to be in touch with your inner child. The test also stated that deer are extremely determined. At first I disagreed with this, but when I really think about it I am a very determined person, but sometimes I hold myself back from letting myself achieve those goals. Looking everything over I can say my inner animal is definitely a deer. You learn something new about yourself everyday when you actually take time to think and reflect.

The song I chose that resinates with me and my life this year is “15” by Taylor Swift. Although I am now 16, this song relates to me and my life because it is talking about how you will do greater things than high school and high school is just a portion of your life and does not define who you are. When Taylor Swift says, “In your life you’ll do greater things than dating the boy on the football team, I didn’t know it at 15.” I love this part of the song because in high school a lot of kids tend to get all worked up over failed friendships and relationships but we have to realize that these things won’t matter in 10 years let alone probably 10 months. This song is extremely applicable to my life right now because I am in the prime of my high school years and it is a great reminder not to get worked up over things that really won’t matter in the long run and to remember there are so many things I haven’t learned yet and experiences I haven’t faced because I am only 16. I love all Taylor Swift songs and they put me in such a better mood no matter how I am feeling, and it is nice to truly be able to reflect on these songs and appreciate the impact these songs have made on me.

This year in leadership I have made some of the best memories ever. Being able to truly bond with everyone in the class has been so awesome and this year has honestly been one of the best years yet I believe. One of my favorite memories that I have made this year in leadership was when morty was trying to tell us it would be cool if we all did something a certain way, but let’s just say the way it was phrased was not the correct way and everyone broke out into laughter because it was so funny. Another memory that has been a favorite of mine is super simple, but sitting at a table with Kylee, lucia, Katie, and Jenna just talking about life and bonding has been the best. And finally another favorite was during the night rally when I got to pretend I was Miley cyrus and sing party in the USA in front of the school!

Someone that I want to recognize in the leadership class is Mina. Although I don’t have one particular story, every single day Mina will simply look over to me and smile and it truly lights up my whole entire day. When Mina comes up to me and asks me how I am or how life is going it means the world. He genuinely cares so much about everyone around him and you can tell he would do anything for anyone and he puts so many people before himself. We definitely need more people in the world like Mina!

I have many hobbies and I love doing all types of different things during my free time. Some of my absolute favorite activities to do during the free time are watching my baby cousins, spending time withy my friends, spending time with family, cheering, going on bike rides with friends, and going to the beach. I love being around those who support me and care about me so no matter what I am doing I will probably enjoy as long as I am surrounded by those I love. Every family gathering I explain to my family how I much rather spend time with them than do normal “teenage girl things.” I love finding joy in the little things and doing things that make me happy and when I do the things I love with the people I love most I could not ask for a better thing to be doing. In such stressful times it is so nice to be able to escape and be able to go run and grab coffee with a friend or ride a bike with my little cousins because those people want what is best for me and genuinely care about my well being and what more is there to ask for! It is so important to find the right people in your life and truly believe I have and I could not be more thankful for that. I love my family and friends so incredibly much and I love being able to share my hobbies with them.

Dear Mom and Dad, Thank you. Thank you for everything you have done for me. I know it may sound cliche but it needs to be said. I would not be the type of person I am today without you two. Not only have you sacrificed so incredibly much for me and made so many opportunities possible for me, but you have taught me so much. You both have showed me who I want to be, you have taught me the importance of morals and values. Through all hardships and struggles I have faced you were standing right there ready to pick up the pieces and teach me a lesson out of it. You have reminded me the importance of friendship and truly have guided me every step of the way. You have strengthened my relationship with God and constantly emphasize how much God loves me and how I can be more like Jesus. Because of you two I truly believe that I am ready for life and can take on any challenges that come my way. Because of you I have confidence, I believe in myself and won’t let people walk all over me, but I also have grace and respect. I value forgiveness and know I am not perfect and it will never be my place to judge anyone. I show kindness to those around me because you have taught me how much just a simple smile can do. So thank you, thank you for everything!

Dear incoming spirit commissioner,
Congratulations, being spirit commissioner is a lot of fun but also comes with some craziness as well. One of my biggest tips that I could give to you as a spirit commissioner is to participate and go all out in spirit. You set the example and if you want participation from the school you have to make sure you are going above and beyond. Another tip that I would give to you is make sure you are communicating with the other spirit commissioners. There are a lot of you and it is important to stick together and get the job done, but also more importantly make memories that will last you a lifetime. Spirit holds many traditions like passing out candy every spirit day and helping sale the spirit wear, but as the new spirit commissioners I hope that you all can create new traditions and put a spin on what we have already done. Take spirit further maybe make videos for the instagram or think of new ideas to get the school involved. There is so much you can do with this job so make the most out of it and spice it up a bit when you can. I hope you enjoy your job as much as I did. Remember to stay on top of everything and get the job done and most importantly do it well. I wish you the best of luck, have fun!

In the leadership program there are several things that we do to maintain professionalism and to practice professionalism that will prepare us for the real world. These practices help us maintain professionalism inside and outside of the program and will not only help us in the current moment but will be extremely beneficial in the future as well. Some examples of what we do in the program would be our public speeches and our mock interviews. For our speeches we either pick our own speech topic or pull a topic out of a hat where we then write a speech and then later on recite it in front of the class. Public speaking is probably one of the most important skills to learn especially when it comes to professional and the real world so when we are doing our speeches each year it is great practice and is helping us build up our confidence and professionalism when we speak in front of large groups. It also teaches us all about eye contact, body language, and how to dress appropriately considering those are all things that we are graded on. Another example of a task we do to help create professionalism is the Mock interviews. In mock interviews we pick a job that we are interested in and then “apply” for it. We write a resume, cover letter, and interview with the professional to see if we get the “job.” Mock interviews teach us how to write resumes and cover letters and how to prepare for interviews in a professional matter. They give us a look into the real world and are a huge benefit.

I have truly enjoyed this year as a leader a lot. It is so crazy to look back on this year because I genuinely believe that I have grown so much as not only a leader but also an individual. Coming into this year it was crazy to think that I was an upperclassman, I was finally one of the “big kids.” Reflecting back on this past year there have been many ups and downs but I feel as if my freshman and sophomore year prepared me for a lot. I faced a lot of challenges this year where I was stabbed in the back, but it really didn’t trip me up much because I knew exactly how to handle this situation. From this challenge I actually gained a lot, I grew closer with those around me and made new friends because they saw what was happening and I could not be more thankful for the friendships and bonds I know have because of everything I have been through. It is crazy when you start to see good things happen to good people. There have been many frustrations in the class when people are not holding up their end of the work and things fall on you, but it truly makes you stronger because you know what to do and unfortunately it just prepares you for the real world. Advice that I would give to the incoming freshman and next years leadership program is to not take everything so seriously. Yes, it is so important to get things done and stay on top of everything we need to do but when we finish that dance, rally, or event it is extremely important that we reward ourselves and just have fun. When minor things occur in the class we need to “Not sweat the small stuff.” and just keep going with our lives. The more we dwell on things in the classroom the more divided we will become and it is so so important that as a class we stay connected and feel as if we can truly rely and trust one another. Without trust all everything will fall apart and we will not be able to put on these amazing events. With that being said we can avoid all of these problems if we take things more lightly and have more fun with one another.
